Joseph R. Pozsgai, Sr., 92, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in his home. Joseph was born on August 6, 1926 in South Bend to Anton A. and Rose (Kaposztas) Pozsgai, and was a lifelong resident. He retired in December 1995 from the University of Notre Dame, where he was employed as the Director of Restricted Funds in the Accounting Department. Joseph had also been employed with the Studebaker Corporation for 17 years and Associates for 13 years. On May 24, 1952, in the former St. Stephen’s Church in South Bend, he married Mary Lou Szabo, who preceded him in death on May 22, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Pozsgai. Joseph is survived by his three daughters, Kathleen (William) Kilbury, Rosanne (Patrick) Molenda, and Cheryl (William) O’Brien all of South Bend, Indiana; his son, Joseph R. (Suzette) Pozsgai, Jr. of Granger, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, Michael (Abby) Molenda, Mary (Terry) Beck, John (Amy) Kilbury, Anne (James) Kusak, Rachel Kilbury, William (Becky) O’Brien, Sean O’Brien, Kate O’Brien, Eric Pozsgai, Megan Pozsgai, and Matthew Pozsgai; three great-grandchildren, Jack Kusak, Ella O’Brien and baby Beck due in August; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Pozsgai and Joan Szabo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2019 in Corpus Christi Church. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, where members of the United States Army will conduct Military Services. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. Joseph served in the United States Army during W.W. II. He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Joseph was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame sports, and was a member of the South Bend Broadway Theater League. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Corpus Christi Church.
