Hugh Dennis Steininger Obituary

MISHAWAKA – Hugh Dennis Steininger, 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at Golden Living Center - Fountainview in Mishawaka.

Hugh was born on September 11, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Margaret (Stickler) Steininger.

On April 22, 1999, in Ludington, MI, he married as the former Elaine E. McCormick. She survives along with Hugh’s children from his former marriage to Angeline (Hock) Steininger, of South Bend, IN; Michelle Davis, of Morganton, NC, Nichole Szenyes, of South Bend, IN, Randall (Robin) Steininger, of Melbourne, FL, Jeffrey Steininger, of Morganton, NC, and Jennifer Kasznia, of Mishawaka, IN; 10 grandchildren;  Dominic, Morgan, Nathan, Cori, Cameron, Claire, Maria, Maxwell, Mitchell, and Lauren; a sister Rhea (Tom) Schmidt, of Culver, IN, and brother Robert (Susan) Steininger, of Plymouth, IN; and 8 great grandchildren; Daylen, Aiden, Mahra, Audrey, Israel, Kiara, Elizabeth, and Elijah.

Hugh was a member of St. Theresa Little Flower Catholic Church in South Bend before becoming ill with Alzheimer’s.  He worked in the Brake and Steering Engineering Department at Bendix/Allied Signal/Honeywell for 30 years.

Growing up on Chain O’Lakes in Lydick, IN Hugh (Dennis) continued his fondness of the water and boating including those wonderful beaches along Lake Michigan. He graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1956, and moved on to the U.S. Navy from there. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan, and though quite meticulous, had a great eye for a well-manicured lawn and landscaping.  He was a brilliant man, and to say he was technical and analytical in everything he did would be an understatement.  Most people know a little about a lot, Hugh knew a lot about a lot!

Visitation with family and friends will be on Friday, July 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. A Catholic service will follow the visitation, at 3 p.m., at Kaniewski. Cremain burial and final resting place will be in Pentwater Cemetery, MI with a  private family service at a later date.
