Fred E. Eyster

Fred E. Eyster, 62, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2018 in his home.  Fred was born on September 23, 1955 in South Bend, Indiana to Eugene T. and Marjorie (Cherry) Eyster, and had been a lifelong resident.  He retired on June 14, 2016 from the South Bend Police Department. Fred was a Patrol Officer and had also been a member of the K9 Unit, Traffic Investigation, FACT, and Honor Guard.  He was a recipient of the Police Officer Medal of Valor.  On December 10, 1976, he married Katharine A. Holland, who survives.  Also surviving are his daughters, Sarah (Dustin) Koszyk of Osceola, Indiana and Christy Eyster of Mishawaka, Indiana; six grandchildren, Jonathon, Joey, Jakob, Ryan, Joshua, and Evan; two sisters, Becky Jo (Mark) Kovacs of Florida and Dema Lynn (John) Hughes of South Bend, Indiana; and his brother, Eugene E. Eyster of Mishawaka, Indiana.  Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive.  A visitation will take place from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.  Fred was a 1974 graduate of LaSalle High School.  Prior to his 36 year career with the South Bend Police Department, Fred was employed with Reith-Riley Construction Company.  He had coached football at LaSalle High School and baseball at Chet Waggoner Little League.  Fred was a member of the F.O.P. #36.  He enjoyed riding his Harley.  He loved his grandchildren, they were one of the best parts of his life.
