Edward (Ed) L. Feikes, 86, of New Carlisle, Indiana passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 in South Bend, Indiana after a brief hospitalization.
Ed was born on November 12, 1932 in LaPorte, Indiana to Anthony and Vera Feikes. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1951, where he played both football and baseball. After high school, he served in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Vermont, he met nursing student Mary Calvi, and they were married in 1957.
Ed received his Education degree from Ball State University and his Masters degree from Indiana University. He taught at a number of schools but was best known for teaching Government and Psychology at LaPorte High School. He retired from teaching in 1994 after 36 years with the LaPorte Community School District.
Ed, a lifelong learner, also trained as a stockbroker. Although he worked only briefly in that capacity, he proved to be very capable in his own personal life. Ed also obtained his Real Estate license and worked as a real estate agent for many years.
Ed was blessed with a wicked sense of humor and a kind heart. He and Mary were very generous and donated to many charities. Ed was fiercely independent and lived on his beloved farm until almost the very end. He was a very social person and always enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Ed was extremely intelligent and was a voracious reader. He excelled in the topics of history, government and finance. Ed was a parishioner at St. Augustine Parish in South Bend, IN.
Ed is survived by his three children, Steve (Chris) Feikes of Syracuse, New York; Gina (Jerry) Hans of New Carlisle, Indiana; and Matt (Sheila) Feikes of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; by his 7 grandchildren; his brother, William “Bill” (Jean) Feikes of LaPorte, IN; and his sister-in-law, Geraldine Foster of Fair Haven, Vermont. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary on August 12, 2018.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert Street, New Carlisle, IN, where Military Honors will take place. Visitation will take place again from 2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1501 W. Washington Street in South Bend, IN, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the church.
