Donald McKeen Smith, Jr., 97, of Notre Dame, IN, passed away on October 28, 2017, in the
company of his family in Dujarie House at Holy Cross Village. Don was born on September 13,
1920 in New York City to the late Donald and Thelma (Hill) Smith. He was also preceded in
death by his son Donald M. Smith III; a brother, Adrian Smith; and a sister Martha MacKelcan.
     On December 21, 1943, Don married Eugenia (Cass) Smith who passed away in 2002.
Don is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Thomas) Pilot of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren,
Kathryn (Jason) Scarlett of Niles, MI, Lauren Perkins of Reston, VA, Donald (Blair) M. Smith
IV, Brianne (Travis) Vandal, and Ashley (David) Rucker all of Charleston, W.Va.; and by eight
great grandchildren, William and Peter Scarlett of Niles MI., Ian and Isabella Perkins of Reston,
VA, Tanner and Dillon Vandal, and Bronwyn and McKeen Smith of Charleston W.VA. A sister,
Mary Crumpton of Ponte Vedra, FL. also survives.
     Don was a graduate of Friends Central High School in Philadelphia, PA. Don served in
the US Coast Guard during WWII and saw action on D-Day at Utah Beach in Normandy, France.
Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he began his life’s career in sales and marketing
for the men’s clothing companies of Jacob Reed and Sons in Philadelphia, Levi’s in Baltimore,
MD, McMullin’s in Atlanta, GA., and The Arrow Shirt Company in Cincinnati, OH, South Bend,
IN, and Fort Wayne, IN. Prior to returning to South Bend, Don was regional sales manager for
Cluett Peabody & Company in New York for 10 years.
He and his wife, Eugenia, retired in South Bend in 1984 where he worked part time for
the former Gilbert’s Men’s Store.
     Don was a long time member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame, IN.
     A Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 on Monday, November 6, 2017 by
Rev. Kenneth Grabner, C.S.C. in Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel, Dujarie House, Holy Cross
Village with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. Friends may call
beginning at 9:00 am prior to the Mass.
