C. Ray Manley, 96, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Healthwin Specialized Care in South Bend, IN.
He was born on November 2, 1921 to the late Thurman and Mabel (McClintock) Manley in Jasonville, IN, and has lived in South Bend since 1946, coming from Bloomington, IN. Along with his parents; he was also preceded in death by one sister, Sara Lou Manley; and three brothers, Richard B. Manley; H. Floyd Manley; and Thomas L. Manley.
Ray graduated in 1941 from Bloomington High School. He attended both I.U.S.B. and Purdue University. Ray was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He retired in 1987 from the South Bend Community School Corporation, where he worked as a Computer Programmer for 20 years.
On June 12, 1948, he married Marguerite L. Connon in South Bend, IN. She passed away on July 4, 2017.
Ray is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Robert) Lynn of Bloomington, IN; three sons, Robert (Holly) Manley of Fort Collins, CO; Paul (Chris) Manley of South Bend, IN; William (Mary) Manley of Lake Stevens, WA; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Sexton of Bloomington, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Ray was a longtime active member of Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church in South Bend, IN, where he assisted with the Boy Scouts of America troop at the church. He was an avid golfer; loved birds and nature; enjoyed photography, traveling, and watching airplanes. Ray was very proficient at fixing any electrical or mechanical problems with car or home. He also loved a good joke. Above all he was dedicated to his family.
The family would like to thank those who provided the excellent and compassionate care Ray received at Memorial Hospital and Healthwin.
Ray had wonderful neighbors and his family greatly appreciates their attentiveness and friendship over the years. They are also very grateful to Ray's Home Instead caregiver Barbara Jenkins whose exceptional care of Ray increased his enjoyment and quality of life.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2018 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN; and from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2404 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Carl Hetler officiating.
A Gravesite Committal Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2018 at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, IN, where Military Services will be performed by American Legion Post #284.
