Brother James Everett, C.S.C. Obituary

Brother James Anthony Everett, C.S.C., age 84, died on Sunday, May 6th, 2018 at Fairview Hospital-Cleveland Clinic in Fairview, Ohio. He was born in South Bend, Indiana on August 18, 1933, the son of James C. and Margaret (Andrichik) Everett. He attended St. Patrick Elementary School and Central Catholic High School in South Bend, and graduated in June 1952. Instead of working again that summer as a cashier at Martin’s Supermarket, he worked at the Notre Dame Camp, on Bankson Lake. He was influenced by the Brothers he had in high school and those at the summer Camp, because he decided to join Holy Cross and went to Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, Wisconsin, then to St. Joseph’s Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana where he received the habit on February 1, 1953. A year later he made his first profession of vows as a Holy Cross Brother and was sent to Austin, Texas to begin college studies at St. Edward’s University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, in February, 1957.

He spent the spring semester assisting at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and in the fall, was assigned to St. Charles Boys Home in Milwaukee, where he counseled and helped students for a year. He then re-joined the faculty at Cathedral High to teach and assist in the counseling office for 5 years.

In 1963 he moved to Chicago where he taught and counseled students at Holy Trinity High for 3 years and was promoted to Assistant Principal. The Provincial recognized James’ talents in counseling and urged him to developing the counseling department at Holy Trinity.

In 1969, he became the Director of the young aspiring Brothers at James Hall at Notre Dame while also teaching and counseling at St. Joseph’s High School and was active with the “Upward Bound” program in South Bend.

In 1977 he went to St. Edward High School in Lakewood, to serve in the counseling office and supervise the campus grounds crew. His passion was working with needy students, particularly those with ADHD problems. After 21 years of generous and loving service at St. Edward, his brother in California needed assistance in the family business. After 4 years of helping and working in parishes in Encinitas, he heard the call from St. Edward High School in 2002 and gladly returned to Lakewood to resume counseling duties and engage in his “ministry of beauty” enterprises with the maintenance and landscaping work.

It was just two years ago, that Brother James’ shining example of 38 years of dedicated service to the mission of St. Edward was honored and rewarded when he was surprised to learn that the football stadium was dedicated with a prominent archway and large letters naming it the “Br. James Everett, C.S.C. Stadium” to honor someone who truly loved the St. Edward students, faculty, staff, and administration for so many years.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 12th, at St. Joseph Chapel from 9:00 to 10:30am on the grounds of Holy Cross College at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward in St. Joseph’s Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling all the arrangements.
