Brother Dennis Fleming C.S.C. Obituary

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Br. Dennis J. Fleming, C.S.C., 73, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., on May 19, 2018.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1945, in White Plains, NY to Theodore J. and Helen M. (Keif) Fleming. After attending N.S. Hunting School and Broad Meadows Junior High School in Quincy, MA, Br. Dennis graduated from Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, MA on May 30, 1963.

Br. Dennis was received into the Congregation of Holy Cross on July 15, 1964, and he made his First Vows on July 16, 1965. He earned an associate’s degree in business administration from St. Joseph College, Old Bennington, Vermont, in 1967. Br. Dennis earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Sacred Heart University, Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1972, and professed Final Vows on July 15, 1972.  He received his master’s degree in elementary education from Villanova University in 1984.

From 1972-1973, Br. Dennis served as a fourth-grade teacher and a sixth-grade religion teacher at St. Gabriel’s School, Stamford, CT. From 1973-1974, he served as a third-grade teacher at St. Cecelia School, also in Stamford. From 1974-1976, he was assistant principal, third-grade teacher and fourth-grade religion teacher at Our Lady of Fatima School, New Castle, DE. He taught reading and religion and was head of the reading department at St. Edmond’s Academy, Wilmington, DE. from 1976-1978. Br. Dennis was principal of Holy Spirit School, New Castle, DE, from 1978-1983, and was principal of St. Patrick School, Pelham, NH from 1983-1986. From 1986 to 1989, Br. Dennis served as director of province renewal in the former Eastern Province of Holy Cross, where he also served as assistant director of seminarians at Stonehill College and director of Connerton House, the residence for Holy Cross religious there. From 1989 to 1991, Br. Dennis served in the Education Department at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, PA., as well as in campus ministry from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 to 2002, he served in various positions in the San Francisco area, including assistant principal (2000-2002) at St. Paul of the Shipwreck School. He was religious superior at Christopher Lodge, the Holy Cross community in Cocoa Beach, FL., from 2002 to 2012. Br. Dennis served as assistant superior at Corby Hall, the Holy Cross Community at the University of Notre Dame, from July 2012 to 2015, then began serving as superior of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., in 2015, until shortly before his death.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Theodore and Helen Fleming and his brother Theodore, Jr. His brothers, William (Nancy) of Braintree, MA, and David (Janice) of Scituate, MA, and several nieces and nephews survive him.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 25, 2018) at the Chapel of Mary, Stonehill College, Easton, MA with a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday (May 26, 2018) at the Chapel of Mary, Stonehill College, North Easton, MA. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Community Cemetery at Stonehill College. Kane Funeral Home of Easton, MA, is in charge of the arrangements.
