Bernard J. Ferro, 84, of South Bend, passed away on Sunday June 3, 2018 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on March 25, 1934, in Elkhart, IN, to the late Ernest J. and Florence (Kretschmer) Ferro. On January 14, 1961 he married Jacqueline Nafradi, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Suzanne (Terrence ) Kazmierczak of Granger and Angela Ferro of South Bend; sons, Bernard II (Lori) and Timothy Ferro, both of South Bend; three granddaughters, Stephanie (Matt) Sczepankiewicz and Michelle Ferro and Catherine Kazmierczak; two sisters, Barbara Marriott of Michigan City, IN and Theresa Ferro of Mishawaka; and by a brother, Dr. Gregory M. Ferro of South Bend. Bernard was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Cingel and two brothers, Philip and Paul Ferro. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and worked for various companies as an offset printer before retiring. He was a Parishioner of St. Hedwig Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, an Usher, a Eucharistic Minister and a lector; he was a former Knights of Columbus Member, Past Vice President of the Deanery Council of Catholic Men, a United States Army Veteran and was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed cooking, especially grilling out, and spending time with his grandchildren. Bernard was a Notre Dame football and Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday June 7, 2018 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a .m. Friday June 8, 2018 at St. Hedwig Church, South Bend, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
