Tom Lake, 92, of South Bend, formerly of New Carlisle, passed away on Sunday August 27, 2017, in his daughter's home in Mishawaka. He was born on November 9, 1924, in South Bend, to the late Harold Thomas, Sr. and Mary (Laughenburg) Lake and was a lifelong area resident. On October 21, 1950 he married Nancy Katherine Raber, who preceded him in death on March 11, 2014. Tom is survived by his son, Allen Lake of Lewistown, Montana; his two daughters, Virginia (Tom) Wood of Westfield, IN and Libby Lake of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren, Nathan Lake, Dustin Lake, Ryan (Jemena) Lake, Kristen Wood, Chelssie (Nick) Urankar, Broc (Scha) Bramlett and Madison Jackson; seven great-grandchildren, Ryder and Ryese Lake, Amelia, Adam and Asher Lake and Jada and Atley Urankar. Tom started Lake's Soil Service in 1954 and was very active in the development of agriculture in the area. He was the founder of Lake's Farm Service, Inc. and retired in 1990. He and his wife Nancy were very active in the New Carlisle community, including the historical society, founding members of the New Carlisle United Methodist Church and restoration of the flag at Hamilton Church. He enjoyed traveling the world and to Arizona with his wife at their second home. He also enjoyed playing cards, skiing, square dancing and he had a great sense of humor. Tom was an honest, kind, compassionate man who was well respected by all. He was a loving father to all of his family. A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday September 1, 2017 at the New Carlisle United Methodist Church. Services will follow at 6 p.m. in the church.
