Joseph J. Grohowski Obituary

Joseph J. Grohowski, 97, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Acres of Indiana in New Carlisle, IN, while being cared for by the Center for Hospice Care.

Joseph was born on June 2, 1920 to the late Joseph J., Sr. and Alice (Olexey) Grohowski in Anderson, IN, and had lived in New Carlisle, IN until he enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He then lived in South Bend, IN the rest of his life.   Along with his parents; he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Stella Kulesia; Dorothy Janiak (who passed away the same day as Joe); and three brothers, Stanley, Sylvester, and Chet Grohowski.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, where he served in Germany, France, and Belgium for 4 years.

Joe retired in 1986 from Inglewood Electric Supply Company, where he worked as a Counter Sales Person for 22 years.

On July 12, 1947, he married Henrietta B. Golichowski at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, IN.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Henrietta B. Grohowski of South Bend, IN; a daughter, Judith Ann Grohowski of South Bend, IN; a son, Allen J. Grohowski of South Bend, IN; a sister, Jenny Orlicki of South Bend, IN; one brother, John (Maxine) Grohowski of Edwardsburg, MI; and several nieces & nephews.

Joe is a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in New Carlisle, IN, where he belonged to the Church’s  Senior Club.  He was also a member of American Legion Post #357 in South Bend, IN for 62 years.  

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m.  Visitation will also take place from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle, IN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle, IN, with Rev. Paul McCarthy officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Polish Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #357 and the U.S. Army.
