John J. Kalil, 93, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday February 13, 2018 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on July 28, 1924, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to the late Samuel and Lillian (Nicholas) Kalil. On April 23, 1960 he married Dolores I. Sikorski, who survives. Also surviving are his two daughters, Jean M. (Brendan) Crumlish and Karen A. Miller, both of South Bend; a son, Joseph Kalil of Noblesville, IN; five granddaughters, Kami, Kari and Kori Miller and Vivian and Dorothy Crumlish; a sister, Agnes Fry of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Joan Gondek of South Bend; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. John was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Mansour, Ann Seward, Sister Rose Marie Kalil (PHJC), Ruth Kalil and Verna David and by three brothers, Philip, John (who died as a toddler) and Louis Kalil. John worked for Dictaphone Corporation for 38 years, before retiring in July 1990. He continued to work part-time for local hardware stores and as a handyman for many years. John enjoyed carpentry, stamp and coin collecting, jigsaw puzzles, and fishing. His true passion was talking to people. His playful and lighthearted spirit always left them smiling. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a United States Army Veteran. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday February 16, 2018 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday February 17, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, where friends may visit for one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church, or to the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Donaldson, Indiana or to the charity of the donor's choice.
