Janet N. Gilroy, 57, of South Bend, IN, passed away unexpectedly in her home, on Thursday, April 13, 2017.

She was born on June 12, 1959 to the late Richard and Mildred (Rotolo) Noll in Linden, NJ and has lived in South Bend for 17 years, coming from Scranton, PA. Along with her parents; she was also preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Weidenberner.

Janet earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Scranton. On April 23, 1983, as Janet M. Noll, she married William G. Gilroy at St. John the Apostle Parish in Linden, NJ.

Janet was an exceptional, loving wife and mother, a loyal friend and a caring academic advisor and mentor to countless students in the college of health sciences.

She was currently employed at Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), where she worked as an Assistant Dean for Student Success in the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences for the past 16 years. No student was ever turned away from her door, wherein they always found a passionate advocate, wise counsel and loving motherly figure.

A devout Catholic, Janet saw the face of Christ in all she met and lived a life of passionate devotion to the service of others. She was an avid gardener and exceptional crafter who took special delight in lovingly making Meg’s highly creative Halloween costumes. She delighted in cooking for family and friends and loved travel, especially her trips with Bill to Ireland. She was moved by the beauty and majesty of the seashore and traded her love of the Jersey Shore for the coastlines of Lake Michigan. Much to the surprise and dismay of her siblings, she was a huge country music fan.

Janet is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, William G. “Bill” Gilroy of South Bend, IN; her limitless daughter, Meaghan F. Gilroy of South Bend, IN; one sister, Karen Jirinec of Linden, NJ; one brother, George (Cheryl) Noll of Clinton, NJ; three sisters-in-law, Maryann Krupski of Blakely, PA; Catherine (Richard) Genovese of Old Forge, PA; Patricia (James) Lessig of Fleetwood, PA; and one brother-in-law, Thomas J. Gilroy of Moosic, PA.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Cremation will follow.

Bill and Meaghan are so moved and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from the IUSB College of Health Sciences and Notre Dame communities.
