Casper Nyikos, 97, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 6, 1920, to the late Gasper and Rose (Molnar) Nyikos. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane (Palkowski) in 1989; his daughter and son –in- law, Janette and David Wojciechowski; his second wife, Jennie (King/Kwieran) in 2002; and his two sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Colt and Rose Dungan. He is survived by his son, Jeffery (Mary Frances), as well as his granddaughters, nieces, nephews, and the Kwieran step-family members. Casper completed one year of high school, and was employed as a contractor’s assistant. He joined the Army in September of 1942 and was honorably discharged in February of 1946, having served stateside as an x-ray technician. He had a varied work history with the South Bend Tackle Company, Drewry’s, the St. Joseph County Highway Department and ultimately the South Bend Park’s Department, from which he retired in 1985. Casper was a skilled woodworker; his unique furniture and cabinetry/countertops will remain a testament to his eye for detail, beauty, and durability. He enjoyed the friendship of many through various organizations, particularly the Chain O’ Lakes Conservation Club and the Z.B. Falcons, Nest #80. Fishing, pool-playing, and listening to music were his favorite activities. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place with private burial in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice, the Northern Indiana Food Bank or the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. A special note of deep gratitude is extended to the staff and his friends at Healthwin Specialized Care. Online condolences may be left at www.kaniewski.com.
